Episode 32: Do I Need to be Certified to be a Personal Stylist?
I once heard the owner of a high end boutique here in Richmond say that he would rather have employees and interns that DIDN’T go to fashion school - because they came with a wide wealth of knowledge and unique perspectives.
If you tuned into Episode 30 (what - you didn’t?? Go listen. I’ll wait…. ), then you’ll know we talked about the type of background you need to be a personal stylist. Hint: ANY background.
The same applies to this question.
You do NOT need to be certified or go to fashion school in order to be a personal stylist.
BUT if you want to be a standout stylist, the master of your craft, and give your clients the best transformations, then, like anything else, ongoing education is CRITICAL.
If you can get certifications, go to school, invest in courses and memberships, dive into documentaries and read books - I’d highly suggest doing some mash up of all of this because it will only grow your skills as a stylist AND business owner.
If you have gone the fashion school route or have a certification that’s also AWESOME. What I find for stylists with this background is that they need to do a little more work to inject themselves into their brand - they need to get real, be relatable and approachable.
Here’s what I want you take away from this:
You don’t need a certification or fashion education to be a GREAT stylist
Getting a certification and doing ongoing education is a GREAT way to improve your skills as a stylist (and biz owner)
Inject yourself into your business NO MATTER WHAT. That’s how you start to build your like, know, trust factors. That, coupled with your expertise, is what books you clients.
Thank you for listening!
