Episode 36: Stay Curious - The Success Series, Part 4 of 4
Hey stylists - welcome back! this week on the podcast we are wrapping up a really fun series called The Success Series!
So let’s get in to today’s episode! If you’re just tuning in I’d invite you to go listen to Episode 33 where we work through an exercise to help you craft your own definiton of success and Ep. 34 where we talk about Standing for Something and how that is step 1 in being successful in your styling business. Ep. 35 was all about Sticking With it and today we’re talking about how Staying Curious will get you to your definition of success.
If there’s anything I’ve learned over almost 5 years of running my own business and being mentored and in programs of some of the most successful entrepreneurs, it’s that running a business is a major experiment!
We start out with this great idea of creating a styling business because we feel called to do it, it lights us up, it’s fun and easy and we can help people.
And we have a pretty set idea on what it looks like to run a business, or launch a style course, or create services. But what we don’t realize is that 99% of the time, even once we have Stood for Something (see Ep. 33 for the 4 things you’ll need to nail before you can be successful), everything we do is still an experiment.
Will this IG post get results? Will this partnership work out? Will this email newsletter get more opens? Will tweaking my signature service in this way be more efficient?
Note that there is a big difference between tweaking something and starting over (see Ep. 35). When we are staying curious - we’re sticking with what we created, but we’re trying out different methods for marketing it and getting it out into the world.
A super relevant example right now is the PSN instagram account! I have been experimenting with what posts get the most engagement, why I think that is, what posts I see get engagement on other accounts, what those look like and doing different things to see what sticks. I’m not getting rid of the IG account, or continuing to post just to stick to an editorial schedule, but really evaluating what seems to be working or not working. For example - I’ve noticed that the business quotes on Monday get a little bit of engagement, but the quotes that get the MOST seem to be more style focused business quotes - so I am going to adapt, try those out, and see if they land better!
A KEY competent to this experiment, is taking your personal feelings OUT of it. A post getting good engagement is not a reason for me to feel sad, or discouraged, but rather it’s a marker for me to say, hmmm, I wonder why this is? What NEW wants to emerge here (as my mentor Suzy Batiz says).
When I ask what NEW wants to come out, I’m staying curious, staying with it, but trying something new. THAT is step 3 in being successful.
