One New Thing #14: I Give a DIY Haircut
One New Thing #14
What: Giving a DIY hair cut
Where: My porch!
Cost: $15 (for the scissors)
Fave thing: Being not too terrible at cutting someone’s hair - now to see if I can do it on my own ;)
This week’s ONT is brought to you by a 5 month old haircut, a pair of scissors from CVS, and being stuck at home.
We had been talking about this DIY hair cut for a few weeks now and I was not very in to doing it - don’t get me wrong, I AM very into the cost savings of DIYing this, but I also know how complicated hair cutting can be! There’s a REASON people go to school for this.
To get prepared, I watched exactly one YouTube video (this one) and made my first cut. The video was super helpful in how to position the scissors (vertically NOT horizontally unless you want a not very cool looking cut). The hardest part was getting it the same length - the tutorial advises that you keep one finger against the head to use as a guard, but I didn’t want to cut that short, so I started at the head and pulled out a bit and then just cut.
I was pretty impressed with how quickly I became confident (it helped that my subject is very easy going and said if it was horrible we could just buzz the whole thing) - but soon I was snipping away like a (semi) pro!
Who knows - maybe I’ll try to turn those scissors to my own head.
