Episode 8: Get Over Yourself: Embrace a Growth Mindset
Intro
Welcome to the From Hobby to Full Time podcast! All of March we’ll be touching on 4 cornerstone mindset beliefs that you need in order to be a successful entrepreneur.
Last week we covered the Failure Mindset, and today we’re gonna tackle the Growth Mindset.
Show notes
The growth mindset is the “I can always learn something” mindset and it closely follows the idea that FAIL actually stands for Faithful Attempts in Learning (credit: Marie Forleo).
Put another way, it’s “simply the belief that our basic abilities can be developed and improved through dedication and hard work”
We’re gonna dive a bit into the science behind this. More than 30 years ago, Carol Dweck pioneered the terms “fixed mindset” and “growth mindset” after doing a series of studies on children - some of whom seemed to rebound really quickly after setbacks, and others to seemed devastated them them.
She explores the idea that most people in adult hood have one or the other when it comes to mindset.
So what does a fixed mindset mean exactly?
You may shy away from challenges
You may be afraid of failure
You may not see opportunities
You may not see possibilities of what you can do / become
You’re simply STUCK in the way you are now
Having a fixed mindset means you think you can never change.
But, lucky for us - we can!
Having a growth mindset as an entrepreneur is critical to your success. I can’t tell you how many different set backs or ‘failures” I’ve had. How many different jobs and income streams I’ve pivoted to. How LONG I’ve been doing this (and in the big scheme, it’s not even been that long!).
Believing that I can grow, change and flourish has allowed me to over come the pure PRESSURE that comes from working for yourself. When you’re self-employed, your brain never turns off. The stress of making money to pay your bills and to thrive can feel like you’re in a boiling pot of water. You loose sleep
So, if you’re struggling with a fixed mindset, I want to give you three ways that you can start to bust out of that and develop a growth mindset:
Become curious - value the process over the end result. When you’re curious in your business, you’ll look into bad experiences with clients and see how they can be better. You’ll look at all of the subscriptions you’re paying for and evaluate, which are worth it, which can you cut back on?
Have a why - when you have passion, a reason for having a business, then you’ll be driven to continue to innovate, keep going when things are hard, and will want to learn new things.
Rewrite what success means to YOU - for some people, having a part-time styling business is their success because it lets them be creative, work, earn money while also being a MOM. When you create your own definition of success, you’ll be inspired to continue to grow. For me, success means that I don’t have to work an office job. I can set my own hours and that to me is SO valuable!

Listener Qs!
How can I stand out as a personal stylist?
There are over 27,000 personal stylists around the world. No doubt, that wherever you live, there are probably at least 3-10 if not MORE stylists in your area.
Niche DOWN. Get to your 4th layer.
Alienate some people.
Talk specifically to THEM
get to know their pain points
Stop only talking about your services, but talk about the results that your clients get from working for you. people want transformations.
Create GOOD branding - fall back to your niche and who you’re talking to? STOP making websites and business cards before doing your work on who you’ll serve. I’v Worked with a lot of stylists who’s niche has changed over time and when they’ve honed down, they’ve gotten to that magic and their whole strategy has changed.
