Episode 29: The Definition of a Personal Stylist

Hello and welcome to The Personal Stylist Podcast! Did you catch the rebrand?

Yep - I changed the name and we’re moving ahead - in alignment. Let’s chat about changing the name for a hot second. I hear from so many stylists that get stumped over what to call their business, what URL their website should be, or even their Instagram handle.

You know what?

It doesn’t MATTER. By putting SO much time and energy into a name - you’re putting off what really matters. If you ARE finding yourself doing this - ask yourself what are you afraid of? Chances are it’s probably fear of judgement, failure, or rejection.

Let me let you in on something - I’ve changed the name my business 3 times. My programs a million times. If I waited to find the perfect name for anything, I wouldn’t be doing anything. And I don’t want that for YOU.

So - let’s get in to today’s topic bc it’s kinda relevant!

I want to talk about The Definition of a Personal Stylist.

A few weeks ago, I was coaching a stylist in The Founders Club (coaching calls are included in the community membership), and one of her questions was around service process and if she could really do the thing she wanted to do (create outfits) and if that was all she did - was she still a personal stylist?

Don’t personal stylists have to clean out closets, shop, do the whole shebang?

I’m here to tell you NOPE.

One of my early mentors once asked me what it was I didn’t like about personal styling. Immediately the answer came: online shopping for clients. I don’t like it. Its hard, can be overwhelming, and takes up a shit ton of time.

That was the first time that my eyes were opened to this idea of creating a business how I wanted to create it. To offer what I wanted to offer.

And it didn’t change my standing as a stylist no matter WHAT.

Another question I often get is that if you’re a part time stylist, or a side hustler, can you call yourself a personal stylist?

Why the fuck not??

This is one of the reasons I changed the name of the podcast - it used to be From Hobby to Full Time and the premise was that I would help you take your side hustle more seriously.

In the past few months this whole phrasing just became SO disgusting to me. I want ot encourage anyone who wants to be a stylist to do that. To give them the tools to create a business that works for them and to do it in a way that lights them up.

And for some stylists - including some in The Founders Club - being “full time” is not in their dreams! Maybe they have a kick ass full time job they love and they love styling on the side. Or maybe they are raising a family and that’s their priority and they do styling on the side.

None of those things makes them less of a stylist.

And that’s what I want to change and challenge in this industry.

A personal stylist ISN’T just someone who clocks 40 hours a week. A personal stylist ISN’T just someone who provides a VIP full service experience. A personal stylist ISN’T just a person who has a virtual course.

The definition of a stylist is someone who empowers someone else through clothes.

Period. End of story.

If you do that - want to do that - you’re a stylist.

So - if you’ve ever struggled with your identity as a stylist - if you’ve been afraid to call yourself that because you aren’t like so and so that you follow on Instagram… will you send me a DM? I’d love to give you a bonus homework activity to help you reframe this.

This is the important work we will do as entrepreneurs, business owners, stylists, humans.
