Episode 28: 3 Social Media Strategies for Serving (Not Selling) - Part 4 of 4

Everyone wants to know how to use Instagram to find more paying clients but they’re scared of death coming off as cheesy. 

Here’s the thing. If you are using Instagram solely to make money, then you WILL come across as cheesy and that annoying person who’s always talking about their program this, their program that (anyone get those MLM messages? Mmmmm). 

If you want to actually get clients from Instagram,  you’ll need to make these 3 shifts. 

1. GIVE MORE THAN YOU TAKE -

    1. For every 2 times you mention your paid offerings or services, you should have 8 times where you’ve offered value or a fun tip or training. This is also known as the 80/20 rule and it proves that the most successful people give to give (out of service!) and they end up receiving. Note - if you are giving / doing free trainings bc you think that’s the way to make more money, you will come across as salesy and cheesy. There’s a fine line here and it takes a mindset shift to cross it.

2. CULTIVATE COMMUNITY - 

    1. Revisit Social Boundaries and start using people’s names, greeting them, and engaging thoughtfully. 

    2. Be a human! Share your routine, ups/downs, challenges, pets, memes, social justice issues, etc. People want to follow people and if you don’t show up as a person, then you’ll show up being cheesy. 

    3. Stand up for something - people also like following people with a POV, who engage politically. If you lose followers - guess what? Those people were probably not going to be your clients anyway, so it doesn’t matter. You want people who are resonate with you. 

3. SHOW YOUR WORK - 

    1. I say this ALL the time - but if you want clients, you need to demonstrate what you do. This can be through little training or style tips, but it’s also about you working with OTHERS. Show the behind the scenes of your client sessions, share your computer work, talk about your processes. The more you do this, the more you are demonstrating that you’re a human, that you’re good at what you do, and that you’re worth hiring. That is selling yourself without even selling yourself.

    2. Use video - ya’ll - it’s TIME to get over your fear of being on camera, claiming that you don’t know what you’re doing on this platform, or that you’re too old. GET OVER YOURSELF and get to helping people! If you are using instagram to find clients, then guess what? It’s not about you - it’s about THEM. And they want to see your work, they want to see you, they want to build that like, know, trust factor so they can buy from you. Because you are uniquely suited to style YOUR clients. They need to hear these things from YOU. And the longer you hide behind your camera, the longer you are taking to serve them and the longer it will take you to make money.

    3. Share your transformations - don’t share client testimonials - share their transformations. No one wants to hear that Sydney is super fun to work with and makes the process easy. What they DO want to hear is that working with Sydney allowed them to get rid of 5 bags of unwanted clothes, they now have a clear vision of their style and getting dressed is a breeze bc they can see everything they own. That’s a transformation and that is what sells you.
